Is there any way of counting the words in a filtered view?

How can I get a word count in a filtered view? Is there any way to do this?

Thanks,

Neil

  • Hi

The easiest way is to lock the segments you don't want included. If you use the Community Advanced Display Filter this has a nice feature to reverse the search and then you can easily lock the things you don't want.

  • Thank you for your reply.

The problem with that is that when I want to unlock them again, I have no way of distinguishing between these newly-locked segments and those already locked by my client. In any case, all I am trying to do is to find an easy way of getting statistics for non-repeated untranslated segments, which I want to look at several times an hour to gauge progress. The community advanced filter gives the view but no statistics. The analysis statistics are misleading because there seems to be no way of knowing how many fuzzy matches are 100% reps within the project. I cannot believe this basic functionality is not there. Is there a reliable way to gauge hourly progress in Trados Studio?
  • One way of doing this *MIGHT* be to filter on untranslated and non-repeated segments using the Community Advanced Filter and set them to some status not used in the project such as "signed off", then deduct them from the work to be done on that status in the WIP report, then reset the status back. But this is a dreadfully convoluted way to get information that is available in a few seconds in either DVX or MemoQ. I will be raising this matter with the SDL rep in Paris on 7 November. I need a solution to this if I am to continue using this software without a serious drag on productivity.
  • OK, after some testing, Paul's solution is indeed the right one. To sum up: Create a WIP report and note how many words in the project are already locked. Call this A. In the Advanced Community Filter, filter on Not Translated and Unique Occurrances and lock them. Create another WIP report and note the number of locked words. Call this B. Deduct B from A and this gives the remaining work to be done to track hourly progress. Then unlock the segments in the view and remove the filter.

I will be talking to the SDL rep in Paris on 7 November to see if there is any quicker way, but it appears not.

Here is a challenge for the developers of the Community Advanced Filter: just show the word count in any filtered view and this would give Trados Studio the same fine-grained analysis capabilities as its competitors.

Thanks to Paul for his reply on this.

    Which?  Wordcount or Analysis?

  • All I need to do is apply some filter criteria and find the number of words that are displayed in the view with the filter applied. This would be a simple word count, not an analysis, as the analysis criteria are already applied in the filter. The key factor would be to have this information available quickly without running a full analysis, i.e. displayed automatically at the bottom of the page whenever a filter is applied.

Some people might find it useful to be able to actually analyse the filtered view, rather than just word-count it, but this use-case would need examining to determine whether there is really demand for it.

That'll be implemented easily, too easy.

  • Excellent... here's the source code, perhaps you can create a pull request with the appropriate changes?

    github.com/.../AdvancedDisplayFilter

I love that we opensource these things so that smart people have the opportunity to effect changes themselves so easily.

    Agree
That is good and the only source
I like it, very much !!
  • For info, I have now found a solution to my problem of tracking ongoing progress, as I have just explained in the topic "How to quickly determine the remaining word count, excluding segments that are repeated within the project".

However, it would be a significant improvement to the Community Advanced Display Filter if a word count could be added.

My thanks to all involved in this.
