sort segments

Question

Hi all, 
 in the editor, how can I sort segments alphabetically (at least, other options welcome), preferably also in a view where I have multiple files open?

Unfortunately it is not possible to change the order of the segments in Editor view. The content will be displayed in the same order as it is found in the source file. 
So in short you would have to change the source file itself to display the content in such order. 
 
The workaround I can imagine would be - if you're looking at translating an Excel file, and if it's really necessary to have the segments ordered alphabetically for the translation - is to save the source as, order the cells in the copy of the source file alphabetically and translate it in Studio. And update your memory with the translation, take the original file (un-ordered) and pre-translate it using the memory.

The difference between Studio and other tools is that we don't use a database and the editor works on the actual file directly. If the editor worked by pulling the file in and then holding the data in memory (unreliable and intensive for the work it has to do) or a database then it would be possible to do this. Not a trivial task. 
 
A workaround is possible, such as the one Saerome created for herself and I guess we could do something like that with an app. but it would be a lower priority for our appstore team at the moment as we have a lot or other stuff on... unless you create an idea for it (there may be one already?) and get some support. If many wanted this we could rethink the need to deliver something like this faster.

 A simple workaround might be to export your translation to Excel (free app in AppStore), sort the segments in Excel, add the Excel file to your project, translate, update translation memory. 
 Then pretranslate your proper file, which should pull in the translations done in the sorted Excel file. I know, not quite as slick as just pressing a sort button, but should work without too much hassle. 
 Or make a little lookup feature: On confirming one segment, lookup the source segment text in an Excel file that's open on the other screen. That Excel file can be sorted alphabetically. 
 I don't have any use for such a feature, but it does not seem like a huge task to cobble something together.
