Font Arial Unicode MS cannot be used

I tried to align some files when I get the error message "Font Arial Unicode cannot be used to display the text", and there seems to be a problem with the background layout. I read that Unicode MS is no longer supported, therefore I loaded a lot of other fonts. No difference, and I am still warned of the Overflow Exception.

The systems I use are Studio 2019, Windows 10 and Word 2016. I can do the translations but alignments would help me a lot.

Any Ideas?Thank you - and Merry Christmas to all!

  • Hello  ,

It would be good to hear from other users, if and how they have been able to bypass this issue.

Although MS 2013 still supports the font 'Arial Unicode MS'

Screenshot of Microsoft Word showing the font selection dropdown with 'Arial Unicode MS' highlighted.

MS dropped the format with the releases of Office 365/2016 as the many MS forums confirm.

Screenshot of Microsoft Word font selection dropdown without 'Arial Unicode MS' available in the list.

  • Hello Steven.
this seems to be the problem. What did Microsoft expect?? I will reinstall Windows 2013 which is quite cheap by now. I hope this will solve the issue. I wonder whether there is some connection with my other problem, ie in Studio 2019 footnotes are not indicated, and then of course I get error messages.
Thank you for your reply. I will follow this thread with great interest.
I wish you and all colleages a happy new year.

  • Hello  ,

Could you post the full error stacks please-

Error dialog box with 'X' icon, 'Click here' link highlighted in Trados Studio, and 'Advanced Editing Options' in red outline.

This might shed some light on whether the werrors are related or something else that needs to be looked at.

Do you get the same errors if you use a different document (create a test document using a standard Arial font)?

  • Hello Steven,

Thanks again for your help. I tried the translation of a similar document (EU Regulation from 2015), and there was no problem with the footnotes. Strangely enough my client sees the footnotes in the problematic text in previous Studio versions. I will have to ask for new text and sdlxliff versions but I will wait until I have installed Windows 2013. Fortunately I can do the translation and somehow copy+paste the footnote numbers.

Unfortunately I don't recognise your screenshot - how do I get there? The error message I see is "Tag fn<id=20"/> entfernt" (= removed).

Before Christmas I sent a screenshot of what I see (the missing footnotes and the Overflow Exception warning) to a colleague of yours. I don't find it, but it isn't that important now.

    Best regards, and thanks again
