Today I was assigned a project via Trados Group Share, tried to open it in Studio 2017 and received an error message "The invalid project XXX could not be activated" ("Das ungültige Projekt XXX konnte nicht aktiviert werden" in German).

I believe this has to do with TQA that must be applied in the Professional version.(you cannot do this in Starter or free;lance versions). 
Please ask your client to either resend the package or ask them to log a support ticket on your behalf.

I really suggest you log a support ticket then via your SDL account/Support and then select the installation option and refer back to this thread - so the support team knows what has been suggested so far. 
It would be great to hear back from you once they find the issue/resolution.
