Object reference not set to an instance of an object error

Hi there,

I'm working on SDL 2015 with a basic .xls file and I can't generate the target file because of the "Object reference not set to an instance of an object" error.

I know this error of course, but the only solution I have found and understood on the Internet (the problem being understanding the tipps, not understanding the language) was to re-do the whole translation in a new project as the issue may come from the source file, or copy and paste my whole translation in the source file. These are no "solutions" to me, but I never have time to ckeck more. But today, I can ask for an actual solution!

I have also seen this can come from the tags, but they are all well used, no message when using F8 with the tag parameters checked.

Could you please advise? Thanks a LOT !

    Hi

    It's hard to answer this without seeing the source file because the Obj. Ref. error is a very generic error. Normally you can save the stack trace by clicking on the small disk symbol when you get the error and this may provide some insight into what the cause was... but even that doesn't always help.

    If you're able to recreate the project and can save a target file then there is clearly nothing wrong with the source file. This means something happened to either the bilingual file or the project file while you were working. This can be security software running on the temp files that are open when you are working for example. In this case it's worth making sure that your anti-virus or other security software is configured to allow Studio to work without interruption. It's also good to not leave your computer running with the file open all the time... I know some users are worried to close the file in case they lose it. Just make sure you confirm everything you do to your Translation Memory and close the file and Studio when you are not using it.

    It might also be a problem of taking the files and running them through other CAT tools... not everyone admits to this process but I have seen it cause issues for users and if at all possible I think it should be avoided.

    Can also be a problem caused by sending files through email, or over poor network connections. Possibly even working on files that are saved on a network drive of some sort.

    There isn't a simple answer to this one I'm afraid and it does seem to affect some users quite regularly and others never at all.

    Thanks a lot for your swift reply, I really appreciate it. I read it as soon as you replied but couldn't reply myself earlier.

    I tried to recreate a project but it didn't work, however after I saved the source file under another format (.xls) and then re-saved it in the original format again (.xslx), then open it in a new project, it worked. I always save the projects and turn off the computer at night, and I don't know about my anti-virus so maybe I could check. At least I'll remember to always give it a try at the very beginning of a translation project, and if it doesn't want to be converted in a target file, save the file in another format and recreate a project...
