Upgrading TMs leads to huge increase in file size - is it possible to reduce it?

Hello,

I've recently upgraded a TM which went from 285 MB to 1G. This creates huge packaqes, long download times and disk space issues. Is it possible to reduce the TM size? Or how can we best handle large TMs with our translators?

Thanks,

Valerie

  • I said earlier that this TM will only contain details relevant to your project. It won't even match an analysis unless you set your fuzzy lookup values appropriately.

I think, given you didn't know about this feature an hour or so ago, that you should spend a little more time making sure you know how it works (if you are interested to make it work). It's used regularly by people preparing projects for others and is a useful tool when used appropriately.

  • So, you are saying that there is no way to reduce the size of 3 times inflated TM.

I have tried a test but failed.
The goal of my testing is so simple. Why  do I have to "Upgrade" my current TMs ?
But, like I said I have failed to "Upgrade" a TM

my TM size 800 MB (0.7 Mil TUs)
I have wasted my time to "Upgrade" 25 Min.
I have stopped in the middle of some step, that is why I have failed my test -actually my test is not even started.
At that step I quickly calculated remain time to finish "Upgrade", then figured out that it will take "10 Hours"
    That is pure nonsense.

    I just posting a screenshot.

You can see the 4th  "... something Model" step. It processing '1,001 TUs' every minute. So, it will takes 700 Min. at least.

Screenshot of Trados Studio showing the 'Upgrade Translation Memories' window with a progress bar indicating 'Upgrading 800MB TM' at the 'Align Translation Model' step, processing 1,001 TUs per minute.

    Conclusion

Do not try to "Upgrade TM"
There is not way to reduce the 3 times expanded TMs size.

It's a bit like trying to fit a gallon of water into a pint glass ;-)  The upgrade process adds more information into your TM database than you had before.

You upgrade to use upLIFT.  The unfortunate thing, in my opinion, is that we force the upgrade.  I don't think we should do this.  If you don't want to take advantage of upLIFT then you should not be forced to.

I'd add something to this as this would only be your own conclusion.

Do not try to "Upgrade TM" unless you want the upLIFT features
There is no way to reduce the 3 times expanded TM size
