When converting into to bilingual tables at the proofing stage, if the file is too large the spelling and grammar checker (in the target language) won't work because it detects too many errors (i.e. half the file is in the source language).
Is there a way around this, such as downloading the Office package for the source language, and the checker then automatically detecting both languages? If this wouldn't work, is there any other solution?

Yes, I ALWAYS have this issue with larger texts. Have you downloaded the Office packages for both source and target languages?
The problem with the option of selecting the target column and running the spellchecker on that section is that it doesn't give you an overview of the text - you have to go through each "error" individually in the box on the right, which is very time consuming.

I understand, you want to work with the red lines under the actual text. a) Yes, I have all languages installed that I use. b) The solution for you might be to tell Word not to check spelling and grammar at all for the source text/ segment status etc. Mark the column, and click on the little language field in the footer:
then select "do not check..." (make sure you select a language):
That should solve your problem.
