InDesign/InCopy - project setup fails - file extension not in dropdown list; error message says there's no file for translation

Hi everyone, I received a file folder for the translation of a magazine. It contains several files, amongst them indd, idml and icml files.

So far, I was only able to create a project with Trados Studio using the idml files as this file format was the only file extension/format I could find in the project settings area (“data type for this project”).

However, we were now told to use the indd file. When I try to create a project with the indd file, I receive the error message “The project has to contain at least one file for translation” (in German). In the project settings, I can see two versions of Adobe InDesign and one version of InCopy, none of which show the right file extension.

I tried to manually change the file extension in both InDesign versions to allow the software to recognize the file, but it doesn’t work.

What can I do to help Trados Studio recognize the file type? I am grateful for any suggestions!

  • Hello ,
the simple answer to your question is that Studio does not have a file type (import filter) for indd files. You can use idml and icml files, and you can export the text boxes ("Stories") of an InDesign file with one command in InDesign (you will get one icml file per Story).
If you are told to use the indd files, this might be the way to go. (Export stories, they are then linked to the indd file similar to a linked image, then "update" once you completed your translation and remove the links. This is the official Adobe workflow AFAIK.)
However, you can export an indd file to idml, use the idml for your translations and save the file as indd. I am not 100% sure, but there should be no data loss. (Does anybody on this forum know?)

  • Hi Daniel, thank you for your fast response. I will ask the file providers if they agree with your approach, hoping they will either agree or make an alternative suggestion.
Will let you know once I receive a reply.
Thank goodness this is not (yet) on a tight schedule...
  • Hi Daniel, the icml files will be used which solves the problem. ;-) Thank you for your input, I learned sth for the future.
