Cvert TM in .txt format into ,txm

Hi, SDL community:

I have TM in.txt format and I want to convert them into .tmx format so I can import into a TM in SDL TRADOS 2017. How can I do this if I no longer have the Trados Workbench that allowed that conversion? Thank you!

  • Hi
I gather that you have a plain text file with your TUs? Since plain text can be about everything it's hard to give detailled instructions how to arrive at a tmx, but if you manage to get the plain text into Excel you should be able to use the free app Glossary Converter (appstore.sdl.com/.../) to convert the Excel file into a tmx.

  • Hi, Daniel:

I thank you much for your prompt answer! Indeed, I did download this Glossary Converter, but since I don’t know how to get the plain text into Excel sheet, I couldn’t do the conversion. Is there any blog or website that explain how to transfer the segments for the plain text into the excel sheet? I mean my TM is quite big, so it would take a lot of time to copy and paste the segment into the Excel sheet, so I guess there must be a program that help save your time and do this. Thank you again. Regards. Silvia
  • Hi Silvia, one possible solution would be that you used Wordfast Anywhere https://www.freetm.com/ (it is a free tool) to upload your TXT memory and then convert it to TMX and download it. You could give it a try. It worked for me with old TXT memories created with the first version of Wordfast, a long time ago.

    Good luck!

  • Hi

Just for a little fun... you could open the TXT in a text editor, like Notepad++, and separate the source text and the target text, then create a filetype in Studio for the resultant files containing the source and target, then finally align them.  If your TXT is really huge this might not be a very good approach but if it's only a few thousand TUs then it could be a way of doing it.

Alternatively you could send me the TXT and I'll convert it to TMX in Trados Workbench for you - pfilkin@sdl.com

I'm not sure Wordfast Anywhere will do this without some work as the formats are not exactly the same (Trados TXT/Wordfast TXT)... you might know that Olifant won't handle a Trados TXT either.

For the benefit of anyone who doesn't remember, or is simply too young to know, the old Trados Workbench could create two types of exchange files... TMX and TXT.  The TXT looks as though it might be XML but it's not... full of opening tags with no closing tags and stuff like that.  Hard to bring into Excel because the source and target are not on the same line.

  • Hi, Paul:

I thank you for your reply! In fact I found an old laptop with Trados-Workbench, which let me could convert txt TMs into .tmx. ones. I really appreciate your help.

    Best regards

  • I might be wrong, I am quite sure that the "Upgrade Translation Memories" wizard in Studio can handle Workbench and Winalign TXT files.

The wizard is included in Studio 2017 (translation memories view) and I suppose it is still available in Studio 2019.

I am mentioning this just in case somebody has this issue but they don't keep the Workbench installed in an old computer.
