Reformatting computers and SDL licences

Hello,

I don’t know where is the best place to ask so I am asking here. I bought Trados Studio 2011 Freelance Plus on 21 November 2012 (order number 283920). I have Windows XP on both computers and need to update to Windows 7 or 8, so my computers will need to be reformatted.

If I have understood the instructions correctly (how to move a licence) I just have to deactivate the licence, reformat the computer then reinstall Trados by reactivating the licence.

Before I go ahead, I would like to check.

1) Is that all I have to do to reinstall Trados Studio 2011 on my computers after upgrading Windows?

2) For reasons of continuity in my work I plan to update Windows in one of my computers (desktop), then reinstall Trados, then do the same with my other computer (laptop). Is this OK ?

Thanks in advance,

Chris Storey

  • Hi Chris,

In terms of Studio you are on the money.  Return you license, then reactivate after you install again.  But make sure you have also copied over all your resources.  So Translation Memories, Termbases, AutoSuggest Dictionaries, AutoText lists, user profiles if you customised things.  There is a great article here by Emma Goldsmith that might be of interest for you... definitely worth a read first: How to transfer SDL Trados Studio to a new Computer.

On continuity... sounds ok too.  If you have a Freelance Plus license you can do this easily having them both active at the same time.  If not then you’ll have to return the licence again on one and activate on the other if necessary.

    Regards
