Incopy and InDesign

Hello all,

I am currently translating a magazine. The project manager sent me a folder with a PDF, an IDML file, an Indd file and all the Incopy files. He needs the Incopy files back. Once I'm done with the translation  of the ICML files in Trados, I would like to proofread and edit my translation in the Indd file (opened through Incopy as only the graphic designer works in InDesign) while seeing the layout. Is there a way to do that ?

I hope my question's clear, it's a bit difficult to explain!

    Hello Daniel,
    Yes, unfortunately there are loads of files. I was wondering if I it was possible to create a link between the translated ICML files and the indd source file to visualise and edit the translation - since there is a link between the source indd file and the original ICML files which have the same name as the translated files. Ever tried to do that?

    Hello Frédérique,
    the icml files *are* linked to the indd (and/or idml) file. I drag the icml files into Studio, translate them and, after finalizing, replace the original icml files (containing source text) with the ones Studio produced (same name, but containing target text). These are then linked to the indd / idml file. If you open the indd or idml file in InCopy, you can see your translations. If you check out and edit the target text, you edit the icml files you copied from Studio. That is no problem.

    Ah, I just tried something new, and it worketh!
    Okay, you check out your stories in InDesign or InCopy, edit them, save the content and check them all in. Now you copy all your icml files (which will now contain the updates you did in InCopy/InDEsign) and copy them into the target folder of your project. Then you go to the editor view of the project, select all icml files and choose "revert to sdlxliff", then the batch task "Update from reviewed target file". You get a dialogue box where you choose "update with files from a specific folder" and you choose the target folder you just copied your updated icmls into. Then you can choose whether you want to align everything, which I always do, or not. Anyways, you'll find your way through this. This is how you get the changes you did in InCopy back into Studio to update your Project and your TMs.

    Loads of icml files: That is normal.

    Great if it works! You do a simple copy and paste from all your translated files into the source folder and accept the replacement of all files then? Can it be that simple?

    That is how I do it. I always take care I (or anybody else) don't have any files checked out when I replace the original with the Studio-produced files, otherwise the user/editor is given the choice to overwrite the updated file, which would really a spanner in the works.
    The thing I just found out when I was pondering your question was how to update the TM with the edits done in InCopy or InDesign. I am very happy to have found out it's possible.
    One thing: Don't unlink the icml files from the indd file until you are really, really sure you're done with them. (That can only be done from InDesign.)
