So if you have a segment for which you have an 96% match and you add it to the editor but make some changes and you want to save the new translation in the TM but wihthout orverwriting the existing translation unit this is possible.

If for the same source segment you want the old suggestion from the Tm and add the new translation also , then when confirming please  click on confirm button on the top ribbon - and select add new translation, and will appear like on the below print screen as I tested with some random text. 

Please note that on the segment translation unit there will be added a 1% penalty.

If after I do what you suggest (click on confirm button on the top ribbon - and select add new translation) later, on in the very last re-revision I do the regular confirmation, does it get back to the regular way (eliminating the old one, and re-confirming the new one as the only one, to avoid such penalty)?

Worth noting that the old TU will only be overwritten if the context is the same.  If the segment is in a different document then correcting the translation and confirming it will not change the original TU so you do not always have to add as a new TU.

In this case you would be able to see the original result after adding the new translation if your settings have this option checked:

The duplicate translation penalty Ana-Loredana Gabur mentioned would not apply in this case.  You can also turn off the penalty if you prefer.

No it won't. This is because adding as a new translation effectively creates a duplicate TU. If you are editing your own existing translations, which seems unlikely if you got a 96% match, this scenario will be unlikely to occur.  So you would only need to add as a new translation if you happen to have translated the same sentence in the same context before and you know you would like to have a different translation this time.
