Upgrade a TMX or import a TMX?

Dear community,

I've just started to use Trados and want to import TMX-files from another TMS. Now, I wonder what is the difference between a mere import of TMX into a new sdltm and an upgrade of a TMX to get an sdltm. Do I get another result?

Thanks in advance to everyone who replies!

  • There is technically no difference based on your question.  But in practice you could import TMX files into existing SDLTMs and not just new ones.  If you upgrade it's always going to create a new TM.

Having said that you could also merge an SDLTM and a TMX to achieve the same thing... so I guess these are all just methods of working with files and you use the one that's most appropriate for your needs.  Merging has some additional benefits... but that's another topic.
