...then after opening in InDesign the (exported .idml.sldxliff file into an) .idml file, text will be missing. Please note that I first translated the same original document from a Word document, where everything is all right. Then I populated the .idml file with the TM content. So far so good, but in the exported (or Save As) .idml file there is missing text, in addition to having some overlapping text... What did I do wrong? since I just ran into this myself, only a few hours after responding to your question... Studio does not extract text from locked layers unless you check the box "Extract content of hidden layers".
Why is there no checkbox for locked layers? In my eyes, this is a bug. Anyways, in most scenarios you can make it work. But please, SDL folks, please fix this in future. This is plain confusing.

Thanks for replying. It seems that the problem may have a number of causes, being probably one of them the process of converting ("Save Target As") to .idml from within Studio. In addition, I just noticed that my .idml file has 7952 words (541 segments) vs. the pdf file (i.e. Word file) with 9017 words (843 segments), which makes me think that the problem comes either from the very conversion (in InDesign) from .indd to .idml. OR from the conversion from .idml to .sdlxliff. At any rate, checking or unchecking boxes in the Adobe InDesign CS4-CC IDML file type, does not seem to make a noticeable difference. Not in this particular case. Summarizing: The exported file from Studio has missing text and misplaced text. I wish I knew more about InDesign, a great industry standard tool.

I would rule out that the problems you experience stem from the indd -> idml conversion. This is (almost) rock solid.
You have more words in the pdf, but do you also have more characters? Pdfs will introduce lots of line breaks and a hypenated word in InDesign will become two words if you retrieve it from the pdf. (E.g. "Tar-get" will be one word if taken from the idml, because there the information is preserved that it's a hyphenated word, while it will be extracted as two words "Tar-" and "get" when you extract it from the pdf.
It is very likely that your idml import settings matter, like extracting master pages or not.
Why not export to html and count characters or words there. You lose lots of formatting, but the text is always exported fully.

More characters, of course. The issue is then why the .idml (apparently) has less content that the .pdf file? I can preview the file in InDesign (installed) while I'm translating, but the issue remains. Thanks.
Did you try exporting all stories in InDesign to InCopy and then work with the InCopy files in Studio?
I don't have InCopy installed. Let's now leave this subject to SDL, if they care to give us some hints.
