"Could not find a part of the path" error message; cannot open package.

So, the problem is, I got a package file (sdlppx) from an agency that is some 150 MB in size and I cannot open it, because I keep getting the same error message.

First error message, right after I select the package file to open:

--

We found problems with some of the filenames in this package and we will attempt to fix them.
We recommend that you verify the filenames after the import is done.

--

Second error message after I specify the project folder in the 'Open Package' dialog and click 'Finish' and after waiting a few seconds for the package to be processed:

--

Could not find a part of the path
'C:\Users\Username\AppData\Local\Temp\39053a5f-e8ac-4aef-8cdd-01e65711ae9c\de-DE\5_Mitarbeiter führen und entwickeln'

--

1. I have tried repairing the Studio installation by going into control panel--> software and right-clicking the studio software and selecting "repair"; but after doing that and re-starting Studio and getting the message that the installation is up to date and OK, I tried opening the package again, but I got the same error message.

2. I also tried a solution along the lines of the following similar error which occurs when opening a world server package, where the problem seemed to be caused by an umlaut character (ü), but ultimately it didn't solve the problem:

https://gateway.rws.com/csm?id=kb_article_view&sysparm_article=KB0029932

The world server error above involves an offending part of the path under the filetypes folder and the solution involves changing the package extension to .zip, unzipping, and changing the offending part (replace the umlaut character with a non-umlaut character), re-zipping and changing the extension back to .sdlppx.

Since the error in my case also involved an umlaut character (führen), I went through the process of changing the extension, unzipping etc., and attempted changing the ü to ue and then in the project file I correspondingly changed all instances where this same "5_Mitarbeiter führen und entwickeln" name appeared.

After re-zipping etc. and opening the package, in the 'Open Package' dialog the ü was changed to ue, but I still got the exact same error message as before, only with ue instead of ü. So it doesn't seem to have anything to do with the umlaut character (which I would have thought strange, anyway).

3. So the agency has now sent me a new package, because they said that with the earlier package the problem might have been a) the file sizes are very large and b) the paths are too long (I am just taking their word for it, because I have only been working with Studio 2019 for about 2 months, and have never encountered this problem before).

But the new package they sent me, where they shortened a lot of path names, still generated the same error messages when I tried opening it. Unfortunately, too, the agency said they tested opening the package, and it worked for them.

Which is disheartening, because if it works for them, and not for me, it seems the problem likely lies on my side...

But, in my defence, I have worked successfully with other packages from agencies in the past few weeks, and a different rather large package sent to me by the same agency only 6 days ago also worked without any problems.

I am running SDL Trados Studio 2019 SR1 - 15.1.3.55768 on Windows 7 Home Premium, Service Pack 1, 64 Bit, 8GB RAM, Intel Core i5-4460 CPU 3.20 GHz.

  • Hello ,

There are a couple of things I would try here.

First of all- please ensure that you have added Studio (and MultiTerm) to your AntiVirus provider.

Now create a new project folder - The address should be something like this

File Explorer window showing a new project folder path: C:UsersJohnDoeDocumentsStudio 2019ProjectsProject1.

Now copy and save the PPX to the folder _ do not try and open Studio by directly clicking on the email attachment.

Now open Studio and - Projects View and Open Package-

    Does thios work?

If not please provide some screen shots and the full error stack.

  • Thank you for the reply; I will say just briefly now that the agency supplied me with a workaround so that I can get on with the translation work -- they sent me sdlxliff files.

When I have time I will get back to your suggestion and try it out; for now I have to concentrate on the work for the next couple of weeks.

  • Hi, I've encountered the same issue as SimonB, tried the 'Control Panel -> Repair' option and the WorldServer option as well. I've also tried creating a new project folder but it did not work. here are the screenshots.cannot open package.docx
