No visible formatting tags for this sentence, appear in the source segment and show to me, why?

Hi,

In the #1 screenshot, you can see the sentence that highlighted with red box; it has taken from this page. it has italic style, light gray color, and bigger size than regular body text in previous and after it. I imported the .html page of this source into Trados Studio and translate just the segment I’m talking about.

Screenshot of a webpage with a sentence highlighted in a red box, showing italicized, light gray text in a larger size than surrounding text.

In  #2 screenshot, you can see, there are no formatting tags in its source segment, and naturally, no relative formatting tags in the target segment! just the translated text.

Screenshot of Trados Studio interface showing a segment of text without any visible formatting tags in the source or target segments.

And finally, I save the file (File | Save Target As…) in a .html file and open it, the formatting text is preserved as its source (#3 screenshot). So why Trados doesn’t show its formatting tags in the Editor view to me, while in the final output, the formatting is preserved and okay?

Best,

Masoud

  • Hi Masoud,

Short answer: because Studio protects the tags.

So, where possible, SDL Trados Studio keeps the formatting and other tags in the background. So, if the tags are before and after a full sentence, they can be hidden. Some of these tags can be made visible by using the 'All Content' filter.

This can be accessed with the file open, via the Review tab display filter dropdown...

SDL Trados Studio interface showing the Review tab and display filter dropdown with 'All Content' filter selected.

This will display tags that are in the background but displayable in the file between the translation segments if you make 'All content' visible:

Comparison view in SDL Trados Studio highlighting differences in translation segments with color-coded text.

Some properties are kept totally behind the scenes and cannot be seen via 'All Content'. Studio preserves these when it makes the text for translation visible in the SDLXLIFF file, then it reassembles the original format file with all its formatting, images, etc.

If you want to see the formatting in SDLXIFF files, this is also possible to a limited extend, via File>Options>Editor>Formatting Display Style:

Options menu in SDL Trados Studio with 'Formatting Display Style' section showing 'Show all tags but do not show formatting' selected.

As you'll see, I have 'show all tags but do not show formatting' selected. This is my preference, so I can see the text uniformly but I can see any tags that occur within the translation segment. There are three options here...

Options menu in SDL Trados Studio with 'Formatting Display Style' section showing dropdown menu with three options for tag and formatting visibility.

So, you can choose to have formatting AND tags visible, or formatting visible but formatting tags hidden (other tags will still be visible when they occur).

You can read lots more about tags in the online Studio documentation:

    I hope this helps!

  • Hi Alison,

Thank you for your perfect and in-detail answer!Ok hand. I did all the changes that you told, and many strange things appear in the.SDLXIFF file, but nothing new happens in the specific segment I mentioned in my question. I guess the segment belongs to those categories of protected tags that Trados Studio never ever let to appear. As you said:

Some properties are kept totally behind the scenes and cannot be seen via 'All Content'

Showing the tags of the specific segment is not too serious for me, but I was curious why the styled segment doesn't have any visible tags. More important for me is the hidden tags are preserved in the final translated file as it should be.

    Best,

    Masoud

  • Hi

Yes, the hidden tags are preserved for the final translated file. It is only when they are present within the segments themselves that one has to be careful not to delete them.

    I'm glad I could help!
