XLF files are handled by default so you should not need to change them to XLIFF (whatever that means).  Here's the default for XLIFF 1.2:

Thank you for your reply, and apologies if my initial query was not very clear!

By 'changing the files to XLIFFs', I mean that I changed the file ending from .xlf to .xliff, thinking that I would then be able to add the tag pairs as there is an XLIFF option in the project settings. When I initially created the project I used the XLF files, and tried to then enter the tag pairs to the XLIFF option in the project settings, which did not change anything, so I assumed that this was because XLF files are not supported in Trados - thank you for clearing that up!

As for the CDATA, perhaps the below will be more clear:

As you can see, some of the tags were picked up and changed to "CDATA", however the other tags are still present, and I want to add these to the tag pairs setting so that I can exclude them from the word count.

Below is a screenshot of the tag pairs that I added to the embedded content section within the project settings - which does not seem to have changed anything within the project. Have I done something wrong? I can't find an embedded content option within the XLIFF 2.0 drop down within the settings, so can't add the tag pairs there, which is why I added them to the XLIFF drop down.

If your XLIFF is XLIFF 2.0 then adding rules to the XLIFF 1.2 filetype won't help as they won't be used.  Do you know what variant of XLIFF you have?

XLIFF 2.0 probably has something like this in the header:

<xliff xmlns="urn:oasis:names:tc:xliff:document:2.0" version="2.0" srcLang="en" trgLang="fr">

XLIFF 1.2 might be like this:

<xliff version='1.2' xmlns='urn:oasis:names:tc:xliff:document:1.2'>

Note the version numbers.

So the first thing is to understand which filetype applies and then we can look at the content.  As I asked earlier it would be far easier for us both if you could provide a small sample of the file.  Just edit it with a text editor and remove all the content apart from a few TUs.  then you can easily anonymise the translatable text.

Thank you Paul, from your message, I've had a look at the file in Notepad and it seems to be XLIFF 1.2.

I've anonymised the file by replacing the text for translation with 'XXX', here is the file open in Notepad:

I tried to attach the file but an error message was thrown up which is why I sent the screenshot instead (I wasn't sure if that was enough for you or not, as I wasn't sure what your next suggestion was going to be and whether you just needed to see the entire file in Notepad) - do you have an email that I can send the file to instead?
