I am having problems opening a word target file. I am working with Trados 2019 and my Word version is 2019.

The source file is on PDF format (28K words with images).

When I try to open the target file I get this message

Microsoft Word error dialog box with a warning icon. Text reads: 'Word experienced an error trying to open the file. Try these suggestions. Check the file permissions for the document or drive. Make sure there is sufficient free memory and disk space. Open the file with the Text Recovery converter.'
I do not think it is anything to do with the first two suggestions. I tried the third: opening it with the recovery option, but did not work.
I have worked with smaller files of the same type and did not have this problem before.

Thanks in advance,

Cynthia

  • Hi

OK, another old trick is to try saving the Source Word file to a different version. So, if it's .docx then save it as a .doc and vice versa.

Create a new project with that file but set to 'analyse only' i.e. don't pretranslate.

Open the Word based sdlxliff then before you translate it, first try saving to Target via File>Save As Target.

If this fails, it is the source file that is faulty rather than the translation process. You need to open the Word file again and look for anything that might be causing the issue.

It that works, then p/retranslate it via batch tasks using a TM based on the first translation.

Then try Save as Target again. If that works, you've solved the problem.

If it doesn't then it's the translation process that has done something to cause the error message.

Let me know if any of the above works.

    All the best,
