Help - Multiple TM segments saved instead of replacing old ones

Hello,

I'm facing an issue since a few months, even though I checked all the settings I was aware of to set the right parameters...

Multiple segments are saved in the TM instead of replacing the one I just corrected. Here is an example of what happens:

Screenshot showing three Translation Memory (TM) segments in Trados Studio with slight variations of the same sentence in different stages of editing.

I first realized I forgot to translate a word, so I do it. Then I thought I could add the accent on the capital. So I get three TM segments for one single sentence. It could be when I correct a term, when I add a symbol to note I have a doubt to check later... There are many reasons to modify a segment, but it doesn't mean I want to keep all wrong versions!

This has many consequences, the most annoying and unsolvable one being that I get many 99% and that I never know which version Studio picked, so I need to check all of the 99% and delete manually (!) every single wrong segment so that it doesn't propagate elsewhere... But my options are good:

Screenshot of Trados Studio's Translation Memory options with settings for updating TMs, including options for 'All language pairs' and segment status such as 'Draft' and 'Translation to be validated'.

Here it is for all language pairs, but it's the same parameter for specific language, and also the same parameter in the project parameters as in the general software options. I also tried to change for "Replace" instead of "Merge", which could have worked as well, but it's still creating multiple TM segments...

Can you please help me ??

  • Hello ,

I have the same problem therefore I'd like to get back to your comment:

    - you have saved three different versions (source) translations for the original source text- As these are near identical (accent/s/en endings) these are treated as three different valid translation segments and will appear therefore as the 99% matches.

-> Is that what the "merge translation units" option in the update TM settings does? I never got it clear what exactly are the (context) criteria for Trados to add an new segment when I select this option. Does Trados compare file names or user fields additionally or something? Could you explain maybe?

I have not yet experienced the duplicates issue during transation itself but I just finished a big correction of existing material in 15 languages: I had all files reviewed in that the translators "translated" them again, afterwards I rechecked the files using "open for review" and after that I updated the main TM with with the "Merge translation units" option set...

Would be great if I could avoid this in the future and finally understand the update settings clearly :-)

    Thanks yve

  • I have the same problem. Update is checked, but Studio still adds a changed segment as a new segment instead of updating the existing one.
