This is not normal behaviour, it doesn't happen on my system.

May I suggest you try running a Windows Repair on Studio, as follows:

1. Close all SDL applications.
2. Open the Control Panel:
   • Windows Vista/7: Start > Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.
   • Windows 8: Right-click on the screen at bottom-left corner and choose Control Panel > Uninstall a Program.
   • Windows 10: Right-click on Start > Control Panel > Select View by: Small Icons > Programs and Features
   • - or type 'Control Panel' in the search line on your bottom Windows toolbar then do the above.
3. Click/highlight the relevant SDL product from the list (e.g. SDL Trados Studio 2019 SR2) and click 'Repair' or 'Uninstall/Change' (then Yes then Repair) either on the top toolbar or on the right-click dropdown menu.
4. Restart Studio/MultiTerm.

Give that a go, it should solve the behaviour.

I'm sorry that repairing Studio didn't help. Did you reboot your computer afterwards?

Another option to try is to download and run the SDL Freshstart app

If that doesn't help, you could try resetting Studio as here:

However, I always open projects from within Studio, it's what I prefer so at least that works for you.

You may find that this behaviour is rectified by the next Studio update.

Some time ago we had similar problem, where file type associations were lost on one machine.

-especially this part "Note: CCleaner is not an SDL product. SDL does not guarantee the functionality of this application", its home page says "..tool for cleaning your PC" wow... I do not trust that kind of nice wordings.

it wasn't dangerous, at all. THe problem was solved with the fix mentioned in step 2.

Solution 2: Restore associations with attached .reg file (only English and German operating system)

WARNING: Before continuing, we recommend that you create a backup of your Windows registry (see step 1). Any unwanted changes cannot be undone and may permanently harm your computer. You use the Windows Registry Editor at your own risk..

1. Make a backup of your current registry (click here for more information)
2. Download the zip archive corresponding to your version of SDL Trados Studio 2014, or 2015, or 2017, or 2019 and extract it to your local drive
3. Locate the .reg file that corresponds to you operating system version  (see Microsoft KB to determine whether you have a 32 or 64 bit operating system):
   • English operating system, 64 bit: Restore_File_Associations_EN_64-Bit_(Version).reg
   • English operating system, 32 bit: Restore_File_Associations_EN_32-Bit_(Version).reg
   • German operating system, 64 bit: Restore_File_Associations_DE_64-Bit_(Version).reg
   • German operating system, 32 bit: Restore_File_Associations_DE_32-Bit_(Version).reg
   You can also open the .reg files in a text editor to see its contents.
4. Close SDL Trados Studio
5. Double click the .reg file corresponding to your operating system and confirm the security prompt
6. Restart your computer

We didn't need to resort to step 3, and which I would not do anyhow.

THe suggestion was to try step 2.

but, others are not, and "the" others could be me. I do not like that kind of chance at all.

I do not believe there was a need for the German reg file.  When you diff the English and German reg file, you will see that the only change is that they turned :C:\\Program Files (x86)\\SDL" to "C:\\Programme (x86)\\SDL" because that's how Windows localizes this folder in the German OS.

But that is, imho, actually wrong.  The path is always "C:\\Program Files (x86)\\SDL", no matter what the OS language is.   "Programme" is just a localized display name in the Windows explorer, but the actual file path is unchanged.

So, I really believe that the English reg key is all one would need to fix this issue.
