Pagemaker files in Studio. Converting them for Trados Studio 2019

Hi,

We have received a few Pagemaker files for translation and I have been looking at ways of creating a translation project with these files.

We are using SDL Trados Studio 2019 with GroupShare.

I have tried installing the LegIt app, as I read that this could convert files to TTX format.

However, when I used it, it said the files were converted, but I could not find the TTX file on my computer.

The other option I looked at was saving the file in a different format using inDesign, but this didn't work, as I think my version of inDesign is too up-to-date.

I have inDesign 2020.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how we can convert these files for Studio?

Thanks!

  • Did you use the Story Collector for extracting the stories from PM? If sou, look at the structure of these files and develop a file type to work on these directly in Studio. If you need help with this, contact me off forum.

  • Hi Jerzy,

Thanks for your response. I haven't been using Studio for that long and there are still lots of things that I need to learn. I am not sure what Story Collector is, I looked it up and didn't find much information. If it's still okay, I will contact you off forum. I am busy the rest of the afternoon, so it will be some time next week. Thanks!

  • Hello Sabrina, as you said, to convert pagemaker files you need indesign 5 or 5.5 (not sure about version 6, but I think it doesn't).

It will convert everything, even tho tables will likely need to be reworked out a bit, since pagemaker used to manage them with tabulators rather than with objects as modern applications do.

You should be able to find a trial version somewhere in adobe website or in internet, after a bit of digging.

When you converted your pm files in indesign then you'll be able to open them even in indesign 2020 or in idml for translation.

Story collector used to be a pagemaker plugin that was able to extract texts from a pagemaker file and save them in xml for translation (and then put the translation back in place) but I don't think it works without pagemaker itself.

    Best regards and good luck!

  • Story Collector was part of the old Trados. It is a plugin for Pagemaker, allowing you to extract the stories (text boxes) from PM and import them back again. So it won't work without PM.

Proprietary PM files cannot be translated. As Enrico says, your chance could be importing PM in InDesign, which is direct ancestor of PM.
