Hard to comment without an example of which file that is. And why are you using the XHTML file type if it's a simple HTML file? FIrst attempt to make this work would be to make sure the HTML5 file type is used.

Thanks for your input.

I didn't change any of those settings, just assumed the system would recognize html files by their file extension. How can I specify that html is an html5 file type instead of XHTML?  IMHO, this should just work out of the box, as in WinAlign.

Please check the settings under File> Options> File Types (and if necessary move the file type up the list.

Now maybe create a small test project and check if the issue is resolved.

And that seems to be exactly the problem.
With all respect, one would assume that in 10 years of using the software you would try to RTFM at least once ;-)

File extension is totally irrelevant when it comes to actual file content. A file with .html extension can contain content written in many different formats/standards. It's up to the user to be in control and instruct the machine to do what the user wants. Not the other way around.
