Although it is possible to run MT through file using MT-

Here I have used SDL Language Cloud as an example-( as the only option- no file based translation memory)

And then run a batch Task

Then i can autopropagate using MT alone-

However, this is not the best way to use Studio to translate.

As a translator, I would assume you would like to build your own resources and not rely on machine translation that is always going to need post editing/proof reading anyway

I would suggest that you use file based translation memory and MT as an additional resource and translate and confirm each segment as you work through the document.

This way you are saving the translations and building your own TM and then first using the matches from the TM (instead of being charged each time for characters in MT where applicable).

Just to clarify... you don't autopropagate here.  The file is already translated.

Most definitley a matter of opinion.  If you are post-editing, and many people do, then this is absolutley the best way to work. You'll still be adding confirmed segments to your TM and building your own quality resource.

One reason for developing the SDL TTS application is to support a faster editing process, and one that is less tiring on your eyes.
