This is a situation facing many translators, so maintaining your TM's on a regular basis should be paramount.

I would suggest keeping your subject matter separate-

i.e if you translate financial and pharmaceutical documents mainly- you should have a separate TM for both subjects.

The easiest way to reduce the size of your TM, would be to export to TMX and then split using a text editor- you can then import the split TMX's into newly created TM's.

Alternatively you can use a tool such as SDLTMConvert-

You can also create filters - for instance

...and delete TU's based on various and multiple criteria

I would divide by date, but you can of course export to TMX and then clean up with Olifant or so. But... that's a bit of a figleaf, is it not? There is a suggestion in the idea section that I think is really due:

I'd like to see that realized. Options like "delete double entries". Or be able to define a degree of fuzziness and then delete all that is similar enough to be a fuzzy match...
