A colleague is opening alignment files created by me, which are full of HTML entities and tags for him ( and <p> etc.). (Source files are XML with embedded HTML.) My file type processes the HTML tags and entities, and I thought this is how it would be stored in the alignment files, but seemingly it is different?
Does opening an alignment file recur to file types installed on the user's instance of Studio? Does my colleague need the file type I used to create the alignment files?

Alignment files are in fact just SDLXLIFFs, i.e. contain already parsed and segmented content. There is no way how their display would be affected by non-existing filetype definition on the computer where you are opening them.
Did you check that on your computer they are really displaying correctly?
Perhaps an incorrect file type was actually used for parsing the sources and if you did save the alignment files directly, without actually opening them and previewing that they are correct, you didn't even notice they are incorrect...

That's not strictly true Evzen as they are binary files (a zip)... but you are correct in that unzipped they contain the already parsed sdlxliff so should indeed contain parsed and segmented content. The xml data fles that accompany the sdlxliff don't seem to contain anything related to filetype settings and the sdlxliff itself is not related to a filetype definition so I'd tend to agree with your concluson.

I dug around in this, renamed sdlalign to zip, and yes, it's a zip file, found the sdlxliff inside and compared... all a bit hindered because my normal desktop is undergoing maintenance and I am working on a spare without anything. Desert island and one Swiss army knife. That kind of feeling. I could not access Studio - only Npp.

Yes. That was it. I prepared the EN-DE files, and later prepared EN-KO files for my colleague, but without the root element which my custom filetype requires, so parsing must have defaulted to AnyXML... I guess I am still in the process of setting up PowerGrep, which is about the silver bullet for all my pre- and postprocessing needs, but I have not cleaned everything up, so ... this mistake occurred while collecting translatable content...

There were TWO sources of error. Apart form the one described above, I thought the alignment process would take the default file type settings, but it takes the file type settings of the active project - okay, I remember now, but this is so obscure - from a UX point of view this is just not good.

I think(!) it's even more obscure - IIRC, it actually takes file type settings from project selected (highlighted) in the projects list, not necessarily from the active one.
I somehow remember commenting on this some years ago somewhere here in the forum...
But I might be wrong, it's been quite some time since I dealt with this intensively...
