Project file name doesn't appear in "Projects" and when I open it from Open Project option, I get error about TB!?

Hi,

At first, I should say this my question is actually include two questions that are connected to each other. The first question is says, why my project file doesn't show in the "Project" tab and the second one says, why I get the error about TB that Trados doesn't recognize while I trying to open my project.

(Trados Stuido 2019).

First question:

Whenever I open Trados 2019, the "Projects" tab shows all my projects files' names, except one of them. Then I select and click the "Open Project" feature from the "Home" tab, and browse the project file (.sdlproj file), but when I select the file, I get the below error and the file down's open to working on it.

Information dialog box in Trados Studio with an error message stating 'An error occurred whilst trying to determine the file version.' with an OK button.

In this situation, to open my file, I have to open the project folder and select the .XLFF document of the project. In this way, the project file I'm talking about will be open and now I can see its name in the "Project" tab and I can translate my file on the "Editor" tab. But the second problem rises with TB.....

Second question:

....Now, my project file is open, but Trados opens the wrong TB, not the one I want, so while I'm in the "Editor" view, click "Project Settings" > Termbase > Use menu > File-based  MultiTerm Termbase... (at this moment, just one TB [ wrong TB that I don't need it for this translation ] is shown in the window, not the right TB I need it). Browse the folder to the right TB file I need for my translation and select the TB. Now the TB is added and show in the Termbase window and also I set it to default termbase and (default) word appears in front of it and uncheck another TB that I don't need it. Finally, click the "OK" button and the right TB loads and correct terms appear in the "Termbase Viewer" window and I can work on my project and translation.

When I finish my translation and close Trados, I have these two problems that I described above and every time I have to do all the steps to ready my file for translation.

Best,

Masoud

  • when I select the file, I get the below error and the file down's open to working on it.

Information dialog box in Trados Studio displaying an error message: 'An error occurred whilst trying to determine the file version.' with an OK button.

Try following the steps in this KB article:

    https://gateway.rws.com/csm?id=kb_article_view&sysparm_article=KB0036858

Now, my project file is open, but Trados opens the wrong TM, not the one I want, so while I'm in the "Editor" view, click "Project Settings" > Termbase > Use menu > File-based  MultiTerm Termbase.

You are mixing up terminology here.  If you have the wrong TM (Translation Memory) then you should not be selecting a termbase.  Please clarify what your problem is here.

When I finish my translation and close Trados, I have these two problems that I described above and every time I have to do all the steps to ready my file for translation.

It sounds as though you are creating your projects with some template that is not the one you think you are using.  I suggest you pay attention to the template that is being used when you create your project and then correct the settings for it as you go through the steps.  At the end you have the opportunity to update this template with your revised settings.  Or after noting which template you are using eigher select a different one or manually edit your template under File -> Setup -> Project Templates.

  • Hi Paul,

I apologize for my mistake, actually, I meant TB (Termbase) in my question and confused with TM (Translation Memory) and wrote it instead of TB! I'm sorry and thank you for your quick reminding to me. I corrected my question title and all TM changed into TB in my body text as well.

I checked out the page: https://gateway.rws.com/csm?id=kb_article_view&sysparm_article=KB0036858. But the solution didn't work for my problem.

I didn't create any template, I had a .docx file and started to translate it as a single document (File > Translate Single Document). Then I choose my document file and set source, target languages, and all the things that I needed for my job. This process worked for my first document/translation job, but when I start it for the second translation, the problems I described in my question happened. I should do and translate more documents like the previous two files and don't like this annoying problem will occur again. Should I start and create for any new translation files from scratch to avoid this problem?

    Best,

    Masoud

  • ok - so you are in fact just using the default project template.  Please go to File -> Setup -> Project Templates and set up the project in this template as you would like to work.  After that the projects you create should be using the correct settings for you.

On the error you receive... f you have really worked through the solutions in there and they are not working then please log a case.  This can be achieved really quickly using this link:

    gateway.sdl.com/liveagentlicensing

    You have two options:

    1. Submit a case using a webform
    2. Use live chat to get a licence reset

You want to use the first option and make sure that you refer to this thread so the teams can see what you have tried already.

Also note you should only mention the error you are getting in the case.  Do not add information about the project template and not being able to see the termbase you want because this will confuse matters since that is definitely not an installation issue.
