I am finding Studio 2019 extremely slow since I upgraded to Windows 10. Any suggestions?

Hi, I recently upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10 and Studio is now running excruciatingly slowly. It takes at least 20 seconds to confirm a segment and move on to the next one. Any ideas on how to speed things up? Is there an incompatibility issue I should know about?

Any advice would be helpful thanks

  • Hello ,

There can be many reasons why there is a lag on the machine.

    You said-

I recently upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10

It is likely (whether upgrading from W7- W10 on the same machine- or migrating to a new machine) that the Windows 10 is actually not up to date and the updates need to be installed.

We have the following article on the SDL Community Wiki, which you should run through (takes some time to complete all the steps) which eradicates quite a lot of issues-

    https://community.sdl.com/product-groups/translationproductivity/w/customer-experience/3392/how-to-part-1-trouble-shoot-unexplained-errors-and-unwanted-behaviour-in-studio-multiterm (parts 1& 2)

Once completed- if Studio is still running slow- make sure you add both Studio and MultiTerm (if you use it) to your AntiVirus exceptions (white list)

Please let us know if this helps.

  • Hello again, sorry it's taken so long but I have followed all the steps in the right order, and all the various operating system, Framework Studio and Multiterm are up-to-date with the latest updates installed, system rebooted several times but I am still having to wait around 30 seconds to confirm every single segment so it is taking me ages to complete tasks. Plus the Verify function blocked my computer for around 4.5 hours yesterday for a file containing about 300 segments :-( I really don't know what else to do.

  • So the problem is your PC. You say, you upgraded from W7 to W10, which lets me suppose, your PC is not a new one. The biggest bottleneck for Studio is the file system on your computer. If your PC is equipped with a SSD HDD (preferably M2 PCIe), then move ALL Studio resources and your projects to this HDD. However, to work smoothly with Studio, you need more than just a SSD. An older PC will also have a slower RAM, slower processor and so on - all this together with the file system may slow down Studio to a snail.

You say, the verification has blocked your PC. This might be due to for example running a grammar verification wit MS Word or using the Language Tool plugin, which may slow down the verification significantly.

But all this shows, that your problem is not Studio, but only your PC, which is simply too slow for Studio. The specs you would need to run Studio really smoothly would be at least a i5 processor (if mobile, i7 would be much better) with really at least 8 GB RAM (provided you use Windows 64 bit; should you use Windows 32 bit - upgrade or switch to 64 bit) and a SSD as a main hard disk. Studio resources should be stored all on a SSD and stored locally! NO storage of Studio files in the cloud. If your files are in the cloud, the live synchronization of these files uses high amount of RAM and slows down your PC significantly and additionally to all other tasks.

  • Hi, Thanks so much. I've tried them all! I have an SSD as a main hard disk, I don't store anything on a cloud. Studio and Multiterm have been added to my antivirus white list and I have uninstalled the LanguageTool plugin which was definitely slowing things down. The only problem is now I can't see the icons related to Studio, such as the TMs or the packages :-( Aside from that Studio is working smoothly and swiftly so I won't complain. Will just try to find a fix to not being able to view any Studio related icons (I had to rename the Windows folder from Studio 15.0 to Studio 15.0_old according to another fix as I could no longer edit my TM settings and I kept getting an error message). It's never-ending!!!

  • To have the icons restored run a repair installation of Studio from the Control Panel in Windows. Or adapt the file associations with certain software via Windows settings. However, the presence of icons does not have the slightest impact on the functionality of the software itself - only the double click option might not work. Using double click to open any files is however not the best way - it is always better to open a file from within the application, as this way you have all options available. Otherwise the file is simply opened with the associated software, not leaving you any chance to open for example with a different application to analyze file structure or similar.
