Problem with Trademarks and special characters

Hi all!

I am quite new to the whole Trados Tool but so far I really like it a lot.

At the moment I only have one problem which I can not solve.

When creating a project with "html" files the special characters for copyright, TM, " or ° etc. are not shown in the source text.

Instead of them I get one to three questionsmarks in the source text. "?" "??" "???".

I have tried to check the import options and simply hit every checkbox in the entity-koversion for all html versions. I also checked the option "change special chars to Inline-Placeholder Tags" as I have seen it helped someone else for the word import options. Just to try everything.

The strange thing is sometimes it works and sometimes it does not. I have played around with the settings and simply hit every checkbox I could find regarding this and one project seemed to have finally worked.

So I created a project template of this and tried to create a new project with the same files. Again the "???" appeared.

Anyone can help me to find a solution? I am working with SDL Trados Studio 2019 on the newest version

Following a example of the issue.

Screenshot showing Trados Studio source text with question marks replacing special characters in dimensions '127 (H) x 85 (L) x 35 (W) cm 50???' and '(H) x 33.5???' '(L) x 13.8???'

Also all the names of the imported files show the following after being imported.

Screenshot of Trados Studio displaying the file name '10266.html.sdlxliff' with a warning icon next to it

Thanks a lot ! Blush

  • <H2>XYZ</H2>
    <P>ABC Test® with ø60 mm.</P>
    <H2><BR>More information</H2>
    <UL>
    <LI>ABCD: Numbers 100 cm / 40”.</LI>
    <LI><STRONG>Numbers 27.5” &amp; 29” Test.</STRONG></LI>
    <LI>This line has no problems 102 mm x 100 mm (abcd); Next - with 120 / 135 mm or 32 mm.</LI>
    <LI>120% Test®.</LI>
    <LI>Problem with the 50" everything else works also Trados puts "(H) x 33.5" and "(L) x 13.8" and "(W)." into new line each for whatever reason: 127 (H) x 85 (L) x 35 (W) cm / 50” (H) x 33.5” (L) x 13.8” (W).</LI>
    <LI>Everything is fine here: 15 kg /42 lb (abc); 99.8 kg / 82.2 lb (abc).</LI></UL>

Sadly I cannot upload the file as it is a .html file which is not being supported for uploading.
Therefore I adjusted the file and copy pasted the content into a txt file.

The thing I have noticed this morning when I tried to add this file to a new project is that Trados does not show the "??" anymore.
However if the project the original file is part of is being created as a new project and the files are added in the process of creating the project the "???" appear again.

When adding the file to an already created project using the "Add file" button in the File overview of a project the "???" wont show. Even if it is the same file.

For me it can be a solution to create a project without any added files and to then add them after the project has been created. Will try this after the current project is fully translated and I have to create a new one with other files.

  • Hello ,

Without the original source file, its impossible to see what might be causing the issue

This is how your text shows in Studio- displaying for instance the trademark perfectly normally.

Screenshot of Trados Studio interface showing text with a trademark symbol displayed normally in the editing pane.

Now once i save the file and view it in the browser again all looks fine

Screenshot of a web browser displaying the saved file from Trados Studio with the trademark symbol appearing correctly.

Maybe its worth substituting the actual (registered) trademark symbol with the correct entity

    HTML Trademark Symbol
    Sign Name code Description
    Tm &trade; trademark symbol
    ® &reg; registered trademark symbol

    Does this help?
