Which Word version do you have?

This way of translating PDF files is always problematic, as all automated conversions can cause problems.

When you open your file for translation in Studio and go to File -> Advanced save, you can store the source file in Word format. This can be adapted and afterwards translated with the previously used TM.

Oh, the Word version is in that case most probably the reason. Studio will save the current Word format. Before you invest a lot of work, just ask someone with current version of Word for help. The file should open there.

Word 2010 works fine with .docx format and I have never had any problems with it so far. I don't want to have to buy another version of Word just yet (Trados 2019 is enough expense for now). But the work-around you suggested worked. I saved the document as a Word file before starting to translate and then was able to save and open the target Word file. Thanks for your help!
