I seem to recall this had something to do with not having set your target language in File -> Options -> Languages:

Try making sure you have set the target language so there is a proper default.

thank you for getting back to me, I've done it and it seems to be working.

I'm a little puzzled though:

a) I don't recall ever setting a default language pair as you suggest (and I've never had this issue in 3 years)

b) is this something you do once only, or once for each new file? I switch between three source languages and at least two target languages, and I don't want to set a single pair only as default - if this is what this step is about.

Anyway, I've set FR-EN as default and then tried to translate files using both FR-EN and IT-EN  TMs and it works, hope I don't have to bother you again

Maybe you did it a long time ago and now just don't recall?  I don't really know... all I can tell is I'd seen that one before and resolved by making sure the target language wasn't optional.  I don't think this was a problem on every machine... and I don't know how to cause it either.

Bit of a strange one... just glad it solved your problem :-)

Just something you do once.

If you switch between languages that's fine, you change them every time you start a new project, which should be no different to the way you are working already.

Might be worth thinking about using Project Templates though.  Then you create your projects with the wizard and have all your languages, TMs, TBs etc. already set up for the language direction you want to work in.  Much better way of working in my opinion.
