You don’t have to upgrade it. The indicator is just telling you that it is no longer providing you with the maximum capability for fragment matching. The upgrade process only extracts the maximum benefit available, it’s up to you whether you do this or not.

The idea here is to get the maximum benefit and maximum capability for fragment matching, so why should I give up on that? TM upgrade should be done once, so what I do not understand is the fact that this has to be repeated every time there is an update to the TM using other resources such as importing from XLIFF files from other colleagues, or a large chunck TMX import. Is there a way in the TM design that it would allocate just a part for all the new imported items and just work on that part for the upgrade instead of having to do the whole thing for the large TM? I know this does not sound feasible, but I am just saying maybe.

Clearly you don't understand what the upgrade is doing.  I guess the name is misleading.  It's not required to allow you to use the TM in a more recent version of Studio. It's required f you wish to maximise the ability of your TM to work with fragment matches.  Clearly if you import a load of TUs from another source then these will not have been used to create more fragments, so you get a sign to indicate your TM can be "upgraded" again.  When you work interactively this isn't needed, but when you import in bulk it is.

I don't understand why you would even want this?  There is nothing preventing you from working with a TM that is not upgraded now.  In fact I don't really understand your problem here?

No, I do understand Paul, and I am not saying that I can not use the TM with this orange rectangle displayed! I just want to make sure that I get the maximum benefit from the fragment matches, and believe it or not, this rectangle symbol sometimes appear over and over again, even if I did not do any import of large files in the TM! I am talking about a TM that has over a million segments, that takes time to be upgraded using the Upgrade function, so it is not nice to redo this upgrade thing every now and then. Again and again I understand that I can work normally without an issue, but the thing is I want to always maximize the use of my application, and seeing this rectangle there means that I am not getting the best fragment matches capability! Hope it is clear now.

to sum this up, this relates only to large Tms, so it seems, that even without importing any major updates to them, and even though they are upgraded already more than once, they still show that orange rectangle button! They are usable, YES, but this symbol does not make me comfortable feeling that I am not getting the best fragment matches from my TM. Just a personal feeling then that there is something that is not perfectly going.

Sure... but what do you want?  If we automated it so the upgrade took place whether you liked it or not every time you imported an XLIFF file you'd have to wait for it and this would not be acceptable either.

In this case it would be a bug.  So make sure you are fully updated and if this happens see if there is any commonality you can identify that might be the cause of this.  Any action you might have carried out on the TM for example.  Current versions are:

SDL Trados Studio 2019 SR2 - 15.2.6.2831
SDL MultiTerm 2019 - 15.0.6.56482

In that case if I may suggest the below if that was possible:

1. A TM is to only be upgraded once.

2. Every time xliff files or TMX files are imported to the TM, only those parts get reindexed and in that way, we would not have to have the whole TM reindexed once again!

I am just sharing my thoughts out loud, so that we can always make the best of our Tms and fragment matches.

In this case how do you properly create the fragments? The larger the corpus the better they become.  I think that if you only do the individual parts that get added the statistical significance would be poor and the results bad.

But if you think this would work... raise an idea in the ideas site.

Further to our discussion on this issue, I have to report something that just happened:

1. I was working on a project today that has a small TM and I upgraded it before I start the project (Of course this was upgraded before, but I found the rectangle icon, so I did it again)!

2. I added a couple of variables only in the TM settings, and to my surprise, the rectangle popped up immediately!! 

Very very strange indeed. I thought I would report this to you immediately.
