Does close and restart Studio help?

No, it doesn't. Also, when Trados Studio crashes, I have to reboot the computer, so I did that, too, just in case--didn't work.

Long shot... make sure you don't have any target segments with only spaces in them.

If that doesn't help try saving your project to another folder.  Then recreate your project from scratch and replace the target sdlxliff file in your new project with the original one saved elsewhere.  That might help.

If it doesn't recreate your project again and this time pre-translate from your TM and try again.

I guess I figured out a workaround that's close to what you suggested: I created a TM from the final version of the sdlxliff file, and then used the TM to pre-translate the original copy of the file, and it seems to have worked (I'm reviewing the results right now). What can I say? Trados sucks big time. I've lost about 6 hours trying to resolve the issue, and that's additional to a couple crashes that I experience on a daily basis.
