How to open a .hhk file for translation

I need help with opening and translating two files, one is .hhk and the other is .hhc. They both give me the same problem:

Screenshot of a .hhk file opened in Notepad++ showing HTML-like tags and content.

This is the file in Notepad++.

Screenshot of Trados Studio with an error message 'The file type is not supported' for a .hhk file.

And this is the same file in Studio.

Any tips on how I can get these things to work?

Thanks for any help.

  • Apologies for the late response.

This is perfectly possible to achieve, but not with your source file as it stands because the file is invalid in so many ways.  For example:

Screenshot highlighting missing closing tags on 'Param' and 'li' elements in the source file.

This file should really look like this for example:

Screenshot showing the corrected source file with proper closing tags for 'Param' and 'li' elements.

If it does then you can achieve what you want with two rules, one not translate when name="Local" and the other to translate in general:

Screenshot of Trados Studio parser rules setup with conditions for 'param' elements to be not translatable when name='Local'.

So unless the source file is corrected I'm afraid Studio can't achieve what you want and you'll need to tackle this another way, perhaps using the advanced display filter to find the content that should not be translated and then lock them?

Another problem is that using the file as you have it leads to this with the quotes showing as well as the inability to filter out content you don't wish to translate:

Screenshot of Trados Studio preview with quotes visible and content not filtered, indicating an issue with the source file.

With the fixed file it would be like this:

Screenshot of Trados Studio preview with the corrected source file, showing properly filtered content without visible quotes.
