Thanks, Paul, for the help offered. I have tried to fix the problem with a bug fix described in the community for another file type (copying the translation into a .zip file of the source file). It seems to have worked, though I have no clue why.

I tried to use this solution and adapted it for Word:

I think what really worked, was copying the whole target text and paste it into the source file. I don't know if the zipping was necessary

Thanks for sharing. But how can you copy the target content if Word crashes?

I'll try and see if I can figure out how to adopt that workaround for IDML.

 In my case, I was able to work in the target document for about 30 seconds, before Word crashed. So I could copy the text

It's also worth seeing if you can open the file with a different version of Word.  If you don't have the latest version of Office installed this can sometimes happen.  So you might not be able to open the file, but someone else will.

Thanks! We tried opening the file on several desktops here but I suppose we all have the same Office-version here installed (365). 

For now it worked by dragging the "document.xml" from target file to source file zip structure. Luckily the text in header and footer wasn't super long so I just copied that over from Studio afterwards. Not the preferred way of working ofcourse but it worked.
