I have experienced the same issue several times. I cannot understand why this happens, but a simple solution consists in creating a project using as source file another file (one that has not been opened recently), then remove that file from the project and add the file that you actually want to translate. This usually works.

Hi, thanks for the reply. This does work, but it really adds to the whole process. Especially when I have to create multiple projects. I have to add, remove, change settings. etc. 
I m currenly in a position where if I deactivate my antivirus (the standard included with Windows) I get a one out of three chance (or less) of creating a project. 

This is so frustrating.

Maybe try using something like Lockhunter to identify what's locking the file?

It might also be helpful if you explain your process since there are several ways to create a project, and not all of them get used in the most appropriate way.

Hi Paul, thanks for the answer. 
For me is a no-brainer, its Windows Defender (if im quoting this correct), since when I de-activate it, I do have some percentage of success. 

To create a project i either drag and drop the files in the intro screen or I go to create-> add files. 

The solution suggested in the first reply does work, I create a project with a file from years ago then remove it, but that just adds steps.

In this case you should probably investigate how to make sure that your Windows Defender is not interfering with Studio projects.

Hi Paul,

I've started a project in Trados dragging and dropping my source file to the Welcome screen and I get this message

I've installed lockhunter as you suggested and this is what lockhunter displays

So, it looks like it's Trados that locks my source file

After looking at the screenshots provided< I'm wondering whether this has to do with the location.

You have Studio installed on C: whilst the Word file is on the D: drive.

I think it's worth testing perhaps, a file that you have saved to your C: drive and then trying to create a project (running Studio as admin).

Do the issues persist?

Like for most Studio users, my CAT tool is installed on the C: drive; all my source (and target) files are on the D: drive; and it has been working perfectly this way for years... with projects also located on the D: drive: would this make the difference?

you're right, in my case this has to do with the location

If I try to create a project with files saved in C, everything is OK

If a try to create a project with the same files saved in D, I get the error message.

However, I would like to keep my setup (Trados in C and files in D).

Is there a solution?

Thanks for getting back to me.

Indeed, many translators will have different drives (Studio/File location) and this should not be a problem and in 99.9% of the cases, it isn't.

But at least now we know the issue is because of the separate drive.

It makes sense I think to assume that there is possibly a projects' folder duplication-

Studio creates a project folder (as default) here-

c:\Users\[USERNAME]\Documents\Studio 2019\Projects\

-even if you save the projects elsewhere.

The projects.xml will however always be in the default folder as above.

I would perhaps suggest simply keeping your projects local and storing the files etc on your secondary drive.
