There could be a couple of reasons why this might be happening.

Is the TM store locally or remotely in the cloud? If it's the later, there might be a connection issue and worth saving the TM locally.

The other likely possibility the LookAhead feature- Tray disabling this - File Options -

Now reopen the project.

To answer your question: the TM is stored locally and indeed the LookAhead feature was and still is enabled. In fact, the problem mysteriously disappeared after some attempts to disable and enable machine translation. As I said, this behaviour was completely random and occurred several times throughout the project. Anyway, the project is finished. Thank you for your advice, it may come in useful next time!
