File opening issue Trados 2009

Question

Trados 2009: can't open files with a file name that is more than 260 characters or a file in a directory with more than 248 characters. Making the file name shorter doesn't work, storing the file on the desktop doesn't work. It just keeps giving the error: the specified path, file name, or both are too long. The fully qualified file name must be less than 260 characters, and the directory name must be less than 248 characters. 
 Is there a way to make Trados 2009 open files with a longer file name?

 I think this is a two-fold problem. First of all the restriction is a windows restriction, not a Trados one. At some point in W10 Microsoft introduced the possibility to remove this restriction by making a registry change... see this section in here "Enable Long Paths in Windows 10, Version 1607, and Later":

 However, since Studio is a 32-bit application there is no guarantee it will work. You could try it and if it doesn't work just reset the registry key back to what it was... but of course you do all of this at your own risk entirely as this isn't anything we recommend.
