Excel character limitation

Hi,

One of our client regularly sends us excel files to translate with character limitations.

I have found the character limitation in Studio but was wondering whether it would be possible to specify a specific character limitation per segment as his excel file contains different cells with different character limitations.

Thank you very much in advance for your prompt reply

Best regards

  • Hi

Use the QA checker in your project.

In the category Segments verification activate "Longer by (%)" beneath "Check for target segments which are:" and set the value to 0, then lower the "Ignore..." to 1 and leave "Based on characters" selected.

That does exactly what you need

    Regards, Jerzy

  • Hello Jerzy, thank you so much for your prompt reply.

Unfortunately, the client chooses a specific character limitation per excel cell (: cell A1 : max 140 characters, cell 12 : max 150 characters...etc) Which means that each segment also has a specific limitation... :(

  • In such case I am afraid Studio has not (maybe yet) an easy solution. However, if the number is placed beside the corresponding cell, you could add a symbol in front of a number (via macro in Excel or Word) to make this an alphanumeric value and this be included in the file for translation. Then this value would appear beneath the segment in Studio.

From what I know Passolo should have such an option as you're looking for, but unfortunately this is all my knowledge.

Unfortunately Studio does not yet support this, so you need a workaround for the moment. Another one to what I described above would be using the QA-checker to try to keep the translation in a similar length to the source (maybe giving 10% as a limit - fist check how far the source does fit the limit) and then checking in Excel for the given limits (you can count the number of characters in the cell with quite a simple function in Excel, so it should be not a big problem to combine this with the customers limit).

I have been told, that some changes shall appear in the file types in the future, so there is hope such a function will be implemented.

    Kind regards, Jerzy
