Dragon Naturally Speaking v15 seems to be incompatible with Trados

I've commented on this on other people's posts, but following my conversation this morning and previously with Nuance support for Dragon Naturally Speaking,

They tell me that 'officially' SDL is not compatible with Dragon, although it is in v13.

V15, however, stalls, delays and finally crashes the mouse, I end up having to wait up to 15 seconds for my words to come out.

There is no question of machine spec I think, since I've just updated to a 10th gen i7.

This is clearly not productive.

They (Nuance) say there are no plans for specific updates regards Trados, that I should speak to SDL about this, so here we are.

I have no idea what it could be obviously, so just putting it out there in case someone has a solution.

There is some discussion on knowbrainer about this but doesn't seem very conclusive except Perhaps try SP Pro.

Any thoughts?

  • Hello ,

DNS is a third party application that we don't formally support.

Maybe another user will be able to help you on this.

  • Hi Mark,

I use Dragon Professional Individual 15 with SDL Trados Studio 2019 on two different computers without any major issues. I dictate directly into Studio, and don't use Dragon's dictation window. When things start getting slow, I usually just restart Studio, which is faster than restarting Dragon, and everything goes back to normal. If your mouse is crashing, could there be some mouse-related software getting in the way?

  • I have refused to upgrade Dragon and am still on version 13 because I have heard nothing but bad news about the performance of later versions. I can confirm that version 13 does work perfectly with Trados Studio 2019, even though it is not officially compatible. I dictate directly, without using the dictation window. I have had no issues of slowness, although I do have a powerful desktop computer with lots of RAM.

If I were you I would see if I can get hold of a copy of version 13, which might still be available somewhere.

Failing that, perhaps look into another voice recognition solution.

  • Hi Nora. I'm thinking about buying Dragon Pro Individual 15. Do you know whether it works fine with Studio 2017? And thanks for your blog by the way, even though the article I read is old (2016) it was extremely interesting! Also if you are planning to do more webinars with the latest version I'm interested. Or can we get the recorded webinars? Thanks!

  • Hi Neil. Are you using the Premium version? And did you use it with Studio 2017? Thanks.

  • I'm using v13 premium with Studio 2019. I tried again to install v15 - it works well for about 7 minutes, so I reinstalled version 13.
I'm considering asking Dragon for a free upgrade to the next version if ever there is one, as I have never been able to use v15 successfully.

  • Hi Véronique,

I have always used just the home version because the recognition was just as good and I had no need of it for anything other than bulk text input. I have never used Studio 2017 but I have never heard of any issues with it.

I recommend you ask a few questions on the speech recognition forums on www.knowbrainer.com

There are some really helpful and knowledgable folk on there and you will get answers, unlike from the makers of the software.

I no longer make much use of speech recognition but if I did, I would continue with version 13 but start looking around for another solution that doesn't suffer the compatibility issues of its successors.

    Hope this is of help.

  • Thank you both and Neil for the Knowbrainer forum, which I didn't know about. I'll have a look. I can't use the Home version because it only supports one language and I need at least French & English. Nuance should offer me a "test" version, I'm waiting for them to come back to me. I'll let you know how it works Mark!

  • Hi Véronique,

I think it should work the same way it does with Studio 2017 and 2021. It's not officially supported (both SDL and Nuance will tell you that), but it works fine for me. There are no immediate plans for future webinars, but I believe you can access the recordings of previous webinars on SDL's recorded webinar page.

  • Thank you Nora. I finally found the recorded webinars page, I hadn't when I asked the question :-) I was promised a "test" version and am waiting for it. Given the price I want to make sure it works on my PC with my software.
