Changing source language

Hi,

I have the following problem and am wondering if anyone can suggest a possible/best way of solving it with SDL Trados 2019 Professional.

I have to manage translations into about 26 languages, and use either French or English as the source language, depending on the target language. I also have a very complete FR-EN translation memory.

For translating into Slovak, English is the current source language (EN-SK translation memory). In a near future, I will have to use French as the source language.

Is there any way with Trados to create a populated FR-SK Translation Memory from my existing FR-EN and EN-SK translation memories?

Many thanks in advance for any suggestions!

  • I don't think there is an easy way to do this, but depending on the size here's a suggestion:

    1. export both TMs to Excel
      1. you could use the Glossary Converter for this to save time
    2. do a look up on the EN to map all the SK translations that have FR-EN and EN-SK
    3. put matching results against the FR in a new column
    4. now you have FR-SK

You will lose context with this since only Trados holds the context.  But that could work.

We did run a developer competition many years ago and the winning app was one that did this.  It was incomplete but the idea was there... but I don't believe it was ever completed.  Might be worth revisiting this to do it properly.  Maybe one for http://ideas.sdl.com
