I'm not sure what the name of this feature is, but I have searched. I thought the name might be "autosuggest", but it doesn't seem so.
When I'm typing in the target, sometimes little "helpful" auto-suggestions about what I might want to be writing jump up.
Can anyone say how I can stop this happening?

The screenshot from Jerzy, File -> Options -> Autosuggest, is the right place to disable this.

It's just that when I was searching to find the answer to this some things came up about this that seemed completely unrelated to it. I just did another search... not sure what I saw before.
There is a very simple answer to all your questions: understand how the software works and learn it.

This is the worst application I have ever had the misfortune to have to use. Like most people, I spend most of my efforts fire-fighting and implementing strategies to deal with nonsense like "unknown hard error", and anticipating the likelihood of the application refusing to generate target files, etc. I want there to be fewer "helpful features", not more of them, and I have learnt enough of the (defective) basic functionality for all my purposes.
Thanks for your help with this thing, but please don't imagine that you can change my well-considered and justified opinion of the quality of this software.
