How can I prevent locked segments from being populated by TM when I prepare the file?

Hi there,

I work with SDL Trados 2017 and use a Mac. I work on a project for a regular client who sends me a Word file to translate but now doesn't want some of the repeated text (headings, contact details) to be translated. I've translated this in the past so it's in my TM.

When I prepare a new file for translation it automatically translates the segments that the client wants to keep in French and that I lock. These translations then appear in the final Word file I send the client.

My question: How can I prevent the TM from automatically populating target segments that I want to then lock and/or prevent these translations from appearing in the final target file? The final file should be a mix of a) my translated content and b) the French content that I locked.

I'm sure this is a basic question but I can't seem to find an answer anywhere so your help would be much appreciated!

Thanks,

Mark

  • There's a couple of things here and a few ways to tackle it:

    1. You could make these headings etc. non-translatable in Word with a search/replace of the style or hidden attribute.  This way they won't even show up in Studio when you prepare the project.

    2. If you have the Professional version (you didn't say) then you could customise the batch task to remove the pre-translate task (unless you have a prepare task without pre-translate in the Freelance version... I'm not sure to be honest...) and then you could prepare your project, then lock the segments you need and finally pre-translate.

    3. Or, if you have the 2019 version AND the Professional version, then you could install this plugin and add it as a custom batch task to your project preparation process:
      https://appstore.sdl.com/language/app/context-segment-locker/1095/
This plugin allows you to specify which segments to lock in the preparation process based on the Document Structure

    4. Or, if you have the 2019 version, the Freelance version, then you could install the plugin in 3. and if it is possible to run a project creation task without the pre-translation you could run this plugin batch task afterwards, and then finally run the pre-translate.

    There might be other suggestions...

  • Hi Paul,

Thanks for your answer. I don't have the Professional version. I have SDL Trados Freelance 2017.

I actually checked and I can't remove pre-translate from the prepare batch task but I ran "analyze" instead. This produced blank target segments until I started to lock the segments, then it populated any 100% matches. I just deleted these and then locked them so I guess that's my only work around for now, except for your suggestion in 1. above.

    Thanks,

    Mark
