Does word count of an Excel file by SDL Studio Analysis include numbers?

When SDL Studio Analysis performs the word count of an Excel file, does it include numbers? The result we got is suspiciously low (We need to know the number of CHARACTERS, not words, as we charge per standard page rather than per word in our market).. When we copied the excel text into Word manually, we got around 180 000 characters, but the SDL Analysis shows only 95 000. The file is full of numbers in tables etc., all editable.  I do not intend to charge the client for numbers, but I need to be sure that it is non-inclusion of the numbers in the count that is to blame for such a huge difference and not something else, i.e. that SDL Studio count did not miss any text. We have quite a few such files, so copying them  all into Word manually is not a good option either.

Thank you,

  • Studio does count numbers (presumably number only segments) depending on the filetypes and settings used for Excel, but in two ways.

    1. it counts the number of characters
    2. it also counts them as recognised tokens IF the TM sees them as recognised numbers

The filetype makes a difference because:

    • if you use the default monolingual Excel filetype the number only segments will be excluded altogether unless you use this option before you prepare your project:
Trados Studio options menu showing the default monolingual Excel filetype with an option to include cells with numeric content.
    • If you use the bilingual Excel filetype then they are counted by default.  This option will exclude them:
Trados Studio options menu showing the bilingual Excel filetype with an option to exclude cells containing formatted numbers.

Interesting the two Excel filetypes have the opposite behaviour by default and something to watch out for.
