"Filling up" a TM with new content does not work

When I try to "fill up" a TM with old content previously left out of the TM, I get the most awkward results; filling up works for a while, but sooner or later, the imports assume a logic of their own, meaning new content is imported but not the files that I had expressly chosen to be imported; eventually the whole process gets stuck at a certain number of added segments. I can try to import as many new files as I like, Studio does not react/grow the TM.

  • Can you explain how you now they are not importing?  I'm sure it's obvious but you're not giving us anything to go on here.  So an explanation of what you did, how you did it, what you expected to see, and what you actually see, would be helpful.

  • An example from the confusion. (1) I have imported five files. Assuming they should show up on the last page of the TM, I am surprised that they do not appear there. When I search the entire TM for a phrase unique to the last of the five imported files, I am directed to that phrase and told that it belongs to segment 7582; however, returning to the view on the entire TM, it turns out that it contains only 7440 Segments. (2) Another example of confusion: Again, I search for a phrase unique to the last file imported. This time, the phrase ist not found. (3) I cancel the unique phrase and click on "Perform Search" to return to viewing all segments of the TM, but this time I am not allowed to jump to the last page of the TM. (4) Now, I return to searching the entire TM for another unique phrase (the part of a sentence), this time I am offered the entire sentence in which my phrase is embedded: segment 7592 supposedly, but the TM has only 7523 segments. At least, the option to jump to the last page of the TM is available again. Unfortunately, Studio has crashed by now, and I need to restart. More confusion: Yesterday,  Studio greeted me with the recommendation to upgrade my TMs. I followed the advice, now the folder that contains my TMs has doubled; to each (presumably) original TM, Studio has added another folder with the same name plus the appendix "(2)". When I import new files into the TM, I don't seem to have the choice to determine which TM to address (well, I possibly do in earlier stages outside of the import function as such), but assume(d) that the import will supply the "updated" TM. Admittedly, "TM" and "TM(2)" differ slightly in size, so it is possible that I may have at some stage addressed "TM" and at a later stage "TM(2)" or vice versa, which could explain the discrepancies decribed above. If this is (part of) the problem, how do I handle the situation? Can I/should I somehow merge "TM" and "TM(2)" so that I have only one updated TM?

  • Paul, any thoughts on my attempt to give you something to go on?

To be honest I left it for now because it looked like too much text to work through easily.  When I'm busy I dip in and out of the forums and leave the harder ones to later!  Apologies for that.

Not necessarily.  And if you delete TUs the numbering doesn't start from one again and renumber throughout the TM.  So it's quite possible you could find a TU with a higher number than the total number within your TM.

    (2) Another example of confusion: Again, I search for a phrase unique to the last file imported. This time, the phrase ist not found.

How do I answer this?  I have nothing to go on other than you telling me you can't find it.  I can assume you know exactly what you're doing, and that you never make a mistake... but even the smartest people do things wrong from time to time and may not notice. To verify this I'd need to be able to follow some steps with some provided TMs and then see why it's not working.

    (3) I cancel the unique phrase and click on "Perform Search" to return to viewing all segments of the TM, but this time I am not allowed to jump to the last page of the TM.

Why not?  What happens?  Can you provide a screenshot so we can see wat you're looking at and maybe spot something you didn't notice?

    (4) Now, I return to searching the entire TM for another unique phrase (the part of a sentence), this time I am offered the entire sentence in which my phrase is embedded: segment 7592 supposedly, but the TM has only 7523 segments. At least, the option to jump to the last page of the TM is available again. Unfortunately, Studio has crashed by now, and I need to restart.

    Still nothing to go on...

Yesterday,  Studio greeted me with the recommendation to upgrade my TMs. I followed the advice, now the folder that contains my TMs has doubled

No surprise there.  When you upgrade your TM you are extracting partial matches as additional TUs that are added to your TM.  This can significantly increase the size of your TM as it's now holding a lot more information used for fragment matching.

Studio has added another folder with the same name plus the appendix "(2)".

This is possibly providing part of the solution to your confusion as you seem to be duplicating TMs and folders somewhere and somehow.  This sounds more like a file management problem... or perhaps an issue related to using OneDrive... which seems to be spectacularly useful at duplicating users files and overwriting with older sets of data.

Can I/should I somehow merge "TM" and "TM(2)" so that I have only one updated TM?

Of course.  We have no clue what version of Studio you are using (always helpful to start every post with this information) but you can merge TMs.  You can also export one to a TMX and import it into the other SDLTM.

how do I handle the situation?

I'm afraid I'm as confused as you by all of this.  I have a definite feeling that it's related to your file management somehow... probably unwittingly... but it would be useful to get some idea of where you save your files, how you manage backups etc.  I think this is probably the root of your troubles and you may even be looking at different TMs to the ones you imported into because of this.  Certainly I think you need to take a step back and think through this clearly.  Maybe try something like this:

    1. create a folder outside of any backup features, and definitely not on OneDrive or similar
    2. copy a TM into this folder
    3. import your SDXLIFF files, or update a project, to this TM
    4. do your searches and comparisons again in this one uncomplicated structure
    5. if things still don't appear to work I'll take a call with you next week some time and we can look at this together
