My Translation Memory was erased – help!

Hi there,

I created this TM more than a year ago and had been using it from time to time without any issues until yesterday.

I was translating a document on which I've been working for a few days, and suddenly I received an error message about my TM.

I could no longer enable it, consult it or update it. It is saved on Google Drive because I share it with another freelancer (we both work on the same project). We've been doing this for more than a year and never had any issues.

In the Google Drive file, you can see that there is two versions of this TM, the initial one and another one marked [conflict]. They are only 14Ko and 324Ko, which is impossible because they should be at least 20 000Ko.

The other freelancer is no longer able to use it as well.

When I try to reopen the TM in Studio, I receive an error message telling me that the TM is not a valid TM. I'm using Studio 2015 but I bought the 2021 version, I just didn't install it yet because I wanted to finish my ongoing project before.

Is there a way to retrieve my memory of everything was lost just like that, for no reason? I have no idea what could have happened.

Thanks a lot for your help!

  • The problem with sharing a TM like this is that they are not designed for this.  So every time you do it you risk locking or corrupting the TM.  It might have even been slowly getting more and more inefficient and you may not have even realised.

If you want to do this you need to tackle it in a different way and create two TMs.  Then you read them both and only write to TM#1.  Your partner reads them both but only writes to TM#2.  That way you never write into the same, uncontrolled TM, risking corruption.

There is also a risk of problems with using Google drive.  As the TM gets larger it takes longer for it to back up, and it's probably trying to back up all the time as you make changes.  It can't manage the saving of new TUs and backups into Google drive properly and you can have problems due to this as well.

You should also regularly back up your TM, and a very good idea is to do this via an export to TMX.  You'll never work on the TMX directly, so whilst backing up the SDLTM is a good idea I'd recommend you do a TMX export at least once a week for safety.

On your current problem.  I haven't ever used it, but I think Google Drive retains the history of changes so perhaps you can go back and find the TM that looks the most complete?
