What does "Merge translation units" mean?

After receiving and opening a return package from a translator, we want to add all the translated units to our main TM before one of us then reviews the translations (manually updating only the TUs that need to be corrected by us).

I know we can add the TUs to our main TM by running the "Update main TM" batch task on the file(s) in question.

When looking at the options on the "Update main TM" batch task, I can see that "Merge translation units" is the recommended option.

The definition of this "merge" option that is given here (https://docs.sdl.com/791864/516130/sdl-trados-studio-2017/translation-memory-update-settings-page) is not very clear.

We basically want every unit in the translated file(s) to go into our main TM. It doesn't matter if the translator has made a mistake, as this will (hopefully) be caught, rectified and manually updated in the TM during the subsequent review.

If there were 100% matches, context matches, etc. in the file when we sent it to the translator and he or she has made corrections, then we want the corrected versions in our Main TM, but I wouldn't want to lose the information on who first created that particular translation unit.

If there were 100% matches, context matches, etc. in the file when we sent it to the translator and he or she has not made any changes to them, then obviously there is no need to replace the original unit in our TM.

Is the "Merge translation units" option the right one in this case?

Thanks,

Andrew
