Apparent Conceptual Problem in Studio 2021

There seems to be a conceptual problem with Trados Studio 2021 - SDL Trados Live is supposed to be an extension of Studio's functionality but it seems to be the primary application instead. I was working locally in Studio on a cloud project and finished the document. I saved the file but when I went to the file list, the percent complete bar quickly updated from 100% back to 62%. I went to Trados Live in the browser and found the file at 88%. Very weird. Also, I changed some settings in Studio, and they changed right back as Stdio synced with Live. This should not happen. Even if the actual file is OK, it is still scary and confusing.

Also, there is not way to migrate your previous local projects to the Cloud which is a pity and a waste of my time and resources because I have to create cloud projects and import my TM there.

Live is a useful extension but you have to realize that is all it is. If this is not the case, and I am missing something, it has to be explained to new users of Studio 2021 right away!

  • Hello ,

Trados Live is a new addition to Studio 2021, which we will continually improve and add functionality to.

When you create a project in Studio, you have the option of creating either a local project or a cloud project.

At this time it is not possible to use local projects in or to convert these into a Trados Live project, but it is functionality, that we intend to add as soon as possible.

It would be helpful if you could provide us with further information regarding the following as I haven't been able to reproduce this at all-

I saved the file but when I went to the file list, the percent complete bar quickly updated from 100% back to 62%. I went to Trados Live in the browser and found the file at 88%.

We also have a SDL Community Wiki section on SDL Trados Live that you may find useful.

With all due respect, this means you were rushing to market with a half-baked product which is something you should have told your faithful customers about. This is fundamental. You should have called Live a Beta. Especially given that your primary product (Studio) is given to creating spurious TMs that the user never knows about unless he or she investigates.

What about my statement that Trados Live is the primary application? Is it the way it was designed?

I will try and get more information on the percentage problem but what else can I tell you beyond what I saw?

15:13  I looked in Studio but, of course, by now it is all updated to 100% all around.

  • Hello ,

As I mentioned previously- Studio provides you with an option of creating either a cloud or a local project depending on what you prefer.

Trados Live is new with Studio 2021, so it's only correct to expect this to evolve and have new features added (as is the case with all software) as time moves, on depending on user feedback and of course technical feasibility.

I think the choice of 'primary application' will depend on personal experience- by this I mean, if you are an experienced translator and have used Studio for many years, your preference is most likely to be Studio, but may opt to use Trados Live to increase flexibility. Someone starting out in the industry for the first time, with little or no experience of Studio, may on the other hand prefer to work in Trados Live, as many applications they use will already be cloud-based, and they simply prefer this option.

    You mentioned-

Especially given that your primary product (Studio) is given to creating spurious TMs that the user never knows about unless he or she investigates.

You control which TM's you use when you set up your project- so I'm not sure which 'spurious TM's' you are referring to so would welcome examples of where this happening.

It's good to know that the percentages now all match up. I would like to think this is maybe a connection issue, but cannot say for certainty without being able to reproduce this on our side.

No, I do not. All my TMs are named as follows ClientNameSourceLangTargetLang - I created ClientNameRuEn, but your software created ClientNameRuEn_ClientNameRuEn and ClientNameRuEn.anytmreverse and ClientNameRuEn_ClientNameRuEn.anytmreverse, and my translations do not necessarily get placed in the TM that I myself created. So if I have to import TUs into a cloud-based "translation engine", I have to locate all these TMs manually and import them which is a headache. Just to point out, I did not at any time reverse this TM.

  • Studio provides you with an option of creating either a cloud or a local project depending on what you prefer.

I got that much even before you "mentioned" it. And that is a distinct disadvantage to the user. But to be able to use the full suite you are FORCED to create cloud-based projects otherwise your addition of a web-app is totally useless.

By the way, who came up with the "bright idea" for this naming convention for project folders - 5fc0bd19-3916-7d31-b1ac-ad54ffffffff? If there are just a couple of projects, I can go into every directory to find what I need. What if I have a dozen? How do I find my target files once they are created? Why can't these folders be named the same as my cloud-based projects?

What connection problem? Like I said, I was working locally. It looks like I am right after all, the local status does not update until it syncs up with Live. This is the opposite of logical.
