Can SDL Trados run on the latest MacBook Air with the M1 chip?

Does anyone know whether SDL Trados can be run on the latest MacBook Air, the one with an M1 chip?

How smooth it is to use SDL Trados on the previous MacBooks?

  • Hi Katherine, thanks - this post is helpful! I've just bought my first Mac, and I have to admit, I hadn't realised that the Mac OS doesn't support Trados! A major oversight on my part, I know, but I didn't even think to check, such is the ubiquity of Trados in the translation world and Macs in the world world - I just subconsciously assumed they'd get on fine ;) Anyway, I'm now looking at how best to make this work (and if I can't, I have 14 days to return my Mac). It looks like partitioning my hard drive is no longer on option on the new M1 machines as Bootcamp is no longer supported. So, I'm looking at a Parallels subscription.

Question: Do you know if the Parallels 17 / Windows 11 option you use will also work for Studio 2019? I would consider upgrading to Studio 2021 but I just want to know if I absolutely have to - I've already spent so much on the new Mac ;) It looks from this webpage like this won't be a problem: https://gateway.rws.com/csm?id=kb_article_view&sysparm_article=KB0030134 but I thought I would check with you too Slight smile

Also, do you have any tips on file management? I'm anticipating there being some teething issues there.

    Thanks!

  • Hi Alex, Bootcamp no longer works on M1 Macs, so Parallels is your only option at this point. I am using Parallels 17 Professional. Works like a dream. I'm afraid I don't know about Studio 2019, but I can't imagine it being any different to 2021 in terms of whether or not it would work on the Mac. Theoretically, as long as Windows works, Studio should. I'm not sure I understand your point about file management. Once you get Parallels and Windows installed you will effectively be running Windows inside your Mac OS, just as would normally on a Windows PC. The difference is you can have it running at the same time as your Mac OS, with all its applications, and switch between the two OSs as you would switch between separate applications. You can keep your files on one or other system, whichever you choose, or on a separate drive or in the cloud. You will have access to Mac and Windows at the same time, unlike in Bootcamp, where my understanding is that you had to shut one down to fire the other up. I am actually using Teamdrive so I can access Studio files on separate computers (Intel and M1) at the same time.

  • Hi Katherine, thanks so much for the detailed response. That's very helpful. I have downloaded the 14 day trial of Parallels 17, along with Windows 11. Studio 2019 is working OK but not quite the dream yet... In the first project, the concordance wasn't working, but then I just deleted it and recreated it, and suddenly it worked and found all the TMs. A couple of issues remain though: it's a bit on the slow side, i.e. about as slow as the PC I replaced my mac with so not ideal (my mac is 16GB ram, M1 processor, 1TB harddisk - so I kind of need it to be amazing for at least a couple of years, otherwise it's not worth the investment). The other issue is that every time I exit Trados, it deletes the Termbase I'm using in the project - i.e. it actually moves from the Cloud into the recycle bin! Which is a bit odd. I'm trying to troubleshoot this, but thought I would share in case useful for anyone. Of course, some of the issues could be because it's the trial version, but it is supposed to be the full version that is used in the trial... Tbh if I can't get it working pretty smoothly, then I think I'll have to decide between keeping the mac and using different software or returning my mac and buying a PC.

  • I just bought a new MacBook Pro M1 13" 8GB RAM, 512 SSD (2021) and I am comparing it with my current MacBook Pro Intel 13" 8GB RAM, 256 SSD (2017). Out of the box, I installed the trial version of Parallels 17 (standard version), I followed the Parallels prompts to download Windows 11 ARM version and then proceeded to install Trados Studio 2021 without moving yet my license (demo version). Everything seems to work, but, due to the x86 emulation, Trados works about 20-30% slower than on my 2017 machine. That's in a real world comparison with a 20,000 word translation that I am currently carrying out.

I am divided: I need a new computer but buying an older Intel Mac just because of Trados seems too much. It is still annoying that I'll be working kinda slower after spending 1700 euros on a new computer. Trados represents 40% of my translation work. My only hope is that future versions of x86 emulation run a bit faster. I don't think that switching for a Mac with 16GB will make a difference either. And a MacBook Pro 14" with the "M1 Pro" is too much for me, plus they have shorter battery life too. That is currently my experience. My new Macbook is sitting aside here in my office as a test machine for a few days before I decide to transfer my data or return it to the Apple Store to exchange it for another model.
