Its always useful to post the full error stack as this often contains useful information as to the cause-

I am wondering whether the problem here may have been caused by leaving the PC on overnight and something like CCleaner has deleted some temporary files.

Have you tried realigning the files?

thanks for replying to my post - the issue now seems to be resolved. Under "Options -> File Types > SDL XLIFF" there was a comma after ".sdlxliff". Since I have removed this comma, I am able to open my .sdlalign files again.
