Importing the client's TMX and delivering a TM for each file in a project with the newly translated TM segments only

Hello everyone!

I'm new here and not very experienced in TM management so I apologise if my questions are rather elementary. 

I would like some help in setting up my translation memories for a new client's large, ongoing project. 

The client has sent me their TM in .tmx format. I understand that I need to import that file into a Trados TM. So far so good.

But here is where get confusing for me: In order to deliver a separate TM for each file, do I need to treat each file as a separate project? Is there a more elegant way of creating one separate TM for each file? And how can I ensure that these separate TMs do not get updated with any of the information from the client's TM?

Last but not least, I need to create one Master TM for my own use. Should that be the TM where I imported the .tmx information?

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

    I think the first question is to determine whether you really need to deliver a TM at all?  What projects are you receiving from your client and what have you been asked to provide when you send the completed job back?

    But to specifically answer what you have asked...

    No there isn't.  You can create a single project with all the files in there and the easiest way to create TMX files for each file would be to use this app from the appstore:

    As you'll be converting the bilingual file it will only contain the information you used to translate that specific file.

    I wouldn't.  You don't know how good the TMX really is, so I'd create a separate TM just for these and update the translations after you've made sure they are correct into your own TM as you work.  You can have as many TMs as you like so this TM you create only needs to be a read only TM.

    Dear Paul,

    Thank you for responding so quickly and helpfully. I apologise for taking so long to respond but I was frantically translating the project my question was about. 

    I did need to deliver TMs to this particular client but I was confused and worried about creating them. 

    Being a rookie, it would have never occured to me to follow the workflow you suggested, i.e. to use the SDLXliff2TMX app. It was a brilliant solution and I really cannot thank you enough!

    Also, that bit of advice about not incorporating the client's TMX into my TM was quite helpful. Turns out the TMX was rubbish, which I stupidly did not expect from this particular client.

    In conclusiong, project delivered, lessons learnt. And thanks again.
